Stamped vs broom finish concrete: what works best in Seattle weather?

Short answer:
Broom finish is more durable. Stamped looks better but needs more maintenance.

Broom finish (most common)

  • Lower cost
  • Better traction in rain
  • Less maintenance
  • More forgiving over time

👉 Best for: driveways, walkways, practical patios

Stamped concrete

  • Higher cost
  • Decorative (stone, slate look)
  • Requires sealing
  • Can get slippery if not done right

👉 Best for: front entries, higher-end patios

Seattle-specific reality

Rain + moisture + freeze/thaw cycles mean:

  • Sealer on stamped concrete will need reapplication
  • Poor installs show faster here than in dry climates
  • Slipperiness matters (especially shaded areas)

My take

If this is a functional surface, go broom.
If it’s a design feature and you’re okay maintaining it, stamped can look great.
